About us
The Management
In September 2016, we took over the management of The White Lion. We wanted to keep this as a traditional village pub with which we aim to provide top quality homecooked food, draught ciders, lager, and cask conditioned ales. We have since achieved our ‘Cask Marque’ accreditation for the ales that we serve.

We have also developed the beer garden with access from the car park and the main front gates of the pub. The beer garden now has a small outside bar with a selection of lager, cider, wines, spirits and soft drinks. Unfortunately, dogs (excluding guide dogs) are not allowed inside the pub but are more than welcome in the beer garden.
The History
The White Lion is a traditional village pub located in Fobbing on the outskirts of Essex. The building dates back to the 14th Century and was originally used as a Chandlery making sails and other parts for ships that used the wharf at the bottom of the road. During the 17th Century the building become a public house, where it was rumoured that Daniel Defoe, the famous author and Jack Straw, the leader of the Peasants Revolt, used to frequent the pub. There are also rumours of ghosts haunting the White Lion. Supposedly a landlord in the 18th Century had killed his daughter for courting one of the sail loft makers against his wishes.

The Peasants Revolt was a march from the village of Fobbing to London which took place in the summer of 1381, it was led by Watt Tyler and Jack Straw. The Peasants Revolt started as a result of the introduction of the first ‘poll tax’ in England. Local riots and demonstrations took place in the village of Fobbing. Tyler, alongside Straw, lead an army of 5,000 peasants to confront King Richard II. The peasants were promised ‘freedom from serfdom and justice’ if they returned to their homes peacefully, however, the next day violence erupted and the King’s army of 40,000 over-ran the rebels. Straw and Tyler, alongside nearly 200 rebels were later executed. There is a commemorative stone outside of the pub remembering the Peasants Revolt.
